Embryo freezing is suitable for women or couples who are going through IVF but wish to preserve the resulting embryos for implantation at a later date.
Embryo freezing is the process of freezing fertilised embryos as part of IVF treatment. This is achieved by collecting eggs from ovaries, fertilising them to create embryos and freezing them after allowing them to grow for several days. This can be done at different stages of development.
Embryo freezing may be suitable for you if you have undergone one cycle of IVF but wish to preserve the resulting embryos for implantation at a later date. This may be because our specialists have advised against a fresh transfer, or for those who are simply not ready to have a baby but wish to preserve their fertility.
Embryo freezing is also an option for those whose treatment is cancelled after egg collection for any reason, are facing medical treatment or who are undergoing gender reassignment.
The embryo freezing process is the same, regardless of whether your embryos are being frozen with the aim of preserving fertility, or as part of an IVF cycle. After we have completed our initial consultations and tests, the process can be broken down into 5 steps:
When do I use my embryos?
Once you are ready for pregnancy, we will remove one of your frozen embryos from storage, before thawing and preparing for implantation, with our

FAQs about embryo freezing
As of 1 July 2022, eggs, fertilised embryos and sperm can be frozen for up to 55 years from the date they are placed into storage. You will however have to renew your consent every 10 years.
There is no right answer when it comes to how many embryos to freeze. It all depends on how many viable eggs you have for the fertilisation process, and how many you wish to freeze for future use. A higher number of frozen embryos results in more chances to conceive.
Unfortunately not all embryos survive the freezing and thawing process, which means that on occasion, some may not survive. Some embryos may also lose a cell or two however most recover and continue to develop. Freezing embryos has no effect on pregnancy outcomes and infant health.
The embryo freezing process includes ovary stimulation via injection and egg retrieval. This can be mildly uncomfortable but is rarely painful. You may feel sick, bloated or experience cramping, with symptoms resolving within one to two weeks.
If you decide not to use frozen embryos, there are a few options for what happens next. Unused embryos can be donated to those who are unable to naturally have children, or to be used for stem cell research. They can also be disposed of.
