If you or your partner are facing male fertility issues, then ICSI fertility treatment may be best for you.
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a powerful fertility treatment where sperm is injected directly into the egg, offering hope for couples facing male infertility.
Both IVF and ICSI are a type of artificial insemination that fertilise collected eggs with sperm to create an embryo that’s later transferred into the womb. The difference lies in how this happens. Sperm and eggs are left to naturally fertilise during IVF, whereas ICSI individually injects single sperm into each egg to aid the process.
ICSI fertility treatment starts with a virtual doctor consultation where you and your partner can share your medical history and treatment preferences. Following the results of your fertility tests, you will decide whether ICSI is the most appropriate treatment for you.
The ICSI treatment process can be broken down into the below steps:
While ICSI is not always a guaranteed successful procedure, it has a slightly higher rate of success compared to IVF on its own. This is due to the fact that the injection process ensures that the sperm always enters the egg, which is more likely to result in an embryo.
A course of fertility medication in order to produce multiple eggs
A sperm sample is provided and a procedure under sedation to collect the eggs from the ovaries
The sperm and eggs are fertilised in the lab through single sperm injection
The embryos are transferred into the uterus
Following two weeks after the embryo transfer event
Male infertility
LGBTQ+ couples
Heterosexual couples

IVF and ICSI are just as effective however for some couples, ICSI can be more successful. Particularly for those with male fertility issues. This is due to individual sperm being injected into the egg.
The cost of ICSI is slightly more expensive than IVF due to the enhancements in how the embryos are fertilised. With Apricity’s all inclusive packages, ICSI is £9,255 whereas IVF is £7,895.
The main way to check male fertility is with a semen analysis. This looks at the quality and quantity of sperm including appearance, concentration and motility. Our at-home
ICSI is recommended for those with male infertility issues. This may include low sperm count, poor motility or abnormally shaped sperm. It is also a next option for those who have previously gone through IVF.
According to the HFEA, the chances of pregnancy are the same for those who don’t have evidence of male infertility, regardless of whether you have IVF or IVF and ICSI together.
ICSI is not a painful fertility treatment. Some patients may experience minimum discomfort after the egg collection procedure however it is carried out under anaesthetic. Injections required during ovary stimulation may cause a little pain but are mostly just slightly uncomfortable.
