Freeze your sperm

Take control of your fertility, preserve your sperm and improve the chances of having a baby in the future.

What is sperm freezing?

Sperm freezing is a method of fertility preservation that allows men to try to have biological children at a later date. The process is also used to store sperm for treatment such as IVF and for other people’s treatment in the case of sperm donation.

Who should consider sperm freezing?

There are many different reasons you may want to freeze your sperm. This can include freezing it to use within surrogacy treatment, if you are due to start a medical treatment such as chemotherapy that can affect fertility, or to preserve your fertility ahead of transitioning or gender reassignment surgery.

If you have a diagnosis of low sperm count, and are looking to use your sperm for IVF & ICSI treatment, or undergoing a vasectomy then you may wish to freeze sperm as an option for the future.

How sperm freezing works

1
Testing
Firstly, blood tests will be carried out to check for infectious diseases including HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.
2
Written consent
You will then need to provide written consent for us to store your sperm, in accordance with the law.
3
Sperm sample

Following this, you will then produce the sperm sample at one of our partner clinics. If you are unable to provide a sample, then surgical sperm extraction is also an option available.

4
Sperm frozen
Once you have provided us with a sample, your sperm will be frozen in small batches, and stored inside liquid nitrogen.

What storage is included?

Our sperm freezing package includes all treatment services required for one full sperm freezing cycle (from one sperm production episode), and storage for one year. The frozen sperm can be thawed whenever you are ready to use it.

Total cost: £975

All inclusive cost for one cycle. No surprises.

Freezing sperm FAQs

How successful is sperm freezing?

Sperm freezing is the most successful way to preserve a man’s fertility. Fertility treatment using fresh sperm is just as successful as treatment that uses frozen sperm. This includes IVF.

How safe is sperm freezing?

Sperm freezing is very safe. Whilst not all sperm survive the freezing and thawing process, there are no known risks to patients and children born from frozen sperm.

At what age should I freeze my sperm?

There are no rules as to when a man can freeze his sperm. However sperm quality and quantity tends to be at peak performance in a man’s late 20s and early 30s. If you are concerned about preserving your fertility, it’s a good idea to freeze your sperm before the age of 35 if possible.

What should you not do before sperm freezing?

Patients are advised to abstain from sexual intercourse or masturbation for 3-4 days before the sperm sample is taken.

Can I freeze my sperm and get a vasectomy?

Men are able to freeze their sperm before having a vasectomy. It’s a much quicker and easy option than potentially reversing the vasectomy in the future.

How long can frozen sperm be stored for?

If taken after 1 July 2022, sperm samples can be frozen for up to 55 years from the date they are placed into storage. You will however need to renew your consent every 10 years for it to be lawfully stored. If you fail to do so, sperm will be removed and disposed of.

What are the next steps when I want to use my sperm?

You will need to have fertility treatment to use frozen sperm. This includes IVF and IUI. The sperm will be thawed and then used to fertilise the egg to create an embryo.

What happens to sperm I no longer want to use?

If you no longer want to use your frozen sperm, you are able to either donate or dispose of them. Frozen sperm can be donated to someone else who wants to start a family - this is a very generous act that can help those who may be struggling with male infertility and require a sperm donor. It can also be donated to research or be used for training purposes by healthcare professionals.
